People of a certain age who complain dating is dead on the club scene have been thrown a life raft — although hopefully not literally.
From this evening, a mini-cruise specifically designed for singles will leave Cork City.
The cruise is the brainchild of Michael Reidy, manager of The Sextant Bar on Albert Quay.
He said he was in the bar one night when some thirty-somethings started talking about the lack of somewhere different to meet people.
He joined in the conversation and a few ideas started to emerge.
“People were talking about going out on a boat and I made some inquiries,” Michael said. “We have now chartered one which will leave from Horgan’s Quay at 7pm.”
The boat, Spirit of the Isles, is licensed to carry 90 people, but Michael said they had cut capacity for the dating cruise to 70 so it will be more comfortable.
Tickets for the event were snapped up when they went on the pub’s Facebook page.
“We only have just a few left,” Michael said. “I’m hoping that the gender balance will be very even on the night.”
For €20, ticket holders get a two-and-a-half hour cruise to Cobh, Spike Island, and back. Two complimentary drinks will be served onboard and a live DJ will provide entertainment.
When the cruise returns to Cork, ticket-holders will also get a free pizza in The Sextant.
“There’s nothing really different for singles in the city. It’s aimed primarily at anybody from 23 to 60 years of age,” Michael said.
“I’m going to go along on the mini-cruise myself to see how it goes. It’s a first of its kind in Cork. If it goes well, as I expect, then we will be looking at hosting one every month, depending on the weather.”
