AIB vows to monitor ATM glitches

AIB last night stressed it would continue to keep a close eye on ATM glitches after stating it had fixed the problem that blighted customers for several days.

Irate customers were yesterday confronted with a third day of difficulties with using AIB debit cards after being told the issue had been resolved on Friday evening. The bank had blamed a third-party service provider for the fault.

The problem centred around the use of AIB debit cards at ATMs operated by other banks, with customers having difficulties withdrawing cash.

The issue spread to AIB ATMs for some of those customers when they went to withdraw cash at these machines. They were wrongly informed that they had exceeded their daily withdrawal limit.

The problem caused widespread inconvenience for customers during what is the busiest weekend for Christmas shopping, although people were still able to use their cards in stores at point of sale.

AIB also said that customers who had not used other ATMs were still able to use AIB machines without difficulty.

A spokeswoman for the bank said that the problem had been solved by around 4pm yesterday.

“We can confirm that AIB debit cards are now operating normally at ATM machines, including non-AIB ATMs,” she said.

“AIB is continuing to monitor the situation very closely.”

She said the problem was caused by a “volume issue” with the third-party provider, which was having difficulty coping with the demand for cash and that this was having a “knock-on effect” on non-AIB ATMs.

She said the third-party provider had “put a fix in place” but stressed AIB were monitoring the matter.

“We apologise to customers again and will ensure that no one is out of pocket,” said the spokeswoman.

She said AIB was working through identifying those who were affected. She said that some people may have used their credit cards at ATMs when their debit card would not work and that this might have incurred higher charges.

The spokeswoman said they were not yet able to estimate how many customers were affected and that the focus had been on solving the problem.

She said that throughout the difficulties over the past three days customers were still able to use cards at point of sale inside shops and that they could get up to €100 cash back on each transaction.
