‘50 Ways To Kill Your Mammy’ renamed in US

Baz Ashmawy’s Emmy-award winning show, 50 Ways To Kill Your Mammy, had to be renamed for the American series of the hit programme.

The radio and television presenter is filming its third and possibly final series, with his mother Nancy, in America.

“We had to call it 50 Ways To Kill Your Mother because ‘mammy’ is a derogatory term for a large black woman in America.

“So they had to do some tailoring but anyone I met loved the name so maybe that’s them being overly protective,” said Baz, who is about halfway through the filming of the series.

“It’s going well. [In] America there is always a smorgasbord of great soundbites and people. There are so many different types of people in the States and I always have a really good time filming there.

“I was in Louisiana, down south, which is very interesting. It’s [Donald] Trump country. It was great, it was really really interesting.”

He was home in Ireland yesterday to launch this summer’s Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps.

He said his mother Nancy has survived all of the show’s US stunts so far.

“I had a lot of hair-raising moments. When you’re in the Deep South, there are lots of big bearded men with guns and the fifth amendment but it was brilliant. It was a great shoot and mammy survived all of them so far with no injuries.

“She shot me in the neck with a taser and I’ve never really truly recovered from that but no I’m fit as a fiddle now at the moment.”

He was asked about another likely series after this one finishes filming but he cast doubt on the idea.

“I don’t know. I don’t think so, I think we’re done. She’s 74 now. I don’t know, you don’t want to flog something to death. It’s a great series, I love it and I had such a laugh with my mum doing it.

“I suppose I’m doing it three years now. It’s like doing How Low [Can You Go]. You do it for a certain period and then it’s kind of run its course and you move on to the next thing. Leave it on a high, you never want people to go ‘that was crap’.”

There are some surprise cameo roles in the upcoming series but he would not say who they might be. One suggestion so far has been the presumptive republican presidential nominee Mr Trump.

“Everyone keeps asking about Trump. It’s scary when you go over there, even in Canada, people are going ‘what?’ It’s like a bad joke. Someone’s messing. He’s got lots of support over there, it’s a scary place in that regard but it depends [on] what part of the country you’re in. It’s a big country.”

The programme 50 Ways To Kill Your Mammy has already been a hit in the US, winning the best non-scripted entertainment show at the Emmy Awards last year.

Baz, 41, engaged to his long-term partner Tanya Evans, said it would be an honour for his mother to walk him down the aisle.

“She gets on very well with my missus, she does want me to get married. She wants the day out and we’ll have our day out. I would be honoured if she gave me away.

“I have daughters obviously and it’s nice for them if their parents are married. I think it’s something that will be simple. It’s not like I’m going anywhere and we’re very much in love,” said Baz.
