You’ve seen the photos, you’ve heard the rumours – celebrities sporting yoga mats and sweat pants? A-listers papped with a healthy glow coming out of fitness studios?
Yes, it’s true, famous people are just like you and me, and they can’t get enough of yoga either.
Hordes of Hollywood stars have applauded yoga not just for toning their bodies, but for bringing a sense of relaxation and inner peace.
Here are 12 of the most famous celebrity yoga devotees:
Irish actor Michael Fassbender is Hollywood's golden boy right now. He has bulked up for recent blockbusters such as Frank and 12 Years a Slave, hitting the gym and loading up on calories. You'd be forgiven for thinking yoga might not be his exercise of choice, but the star is mad about his mat, practising the discipline every day. During the film Hunger in which he played Bobby Sands, Fassbender even credited yoga with allowing him to drop weight but still retain muscle.
A long-time advocate of yoga, actress Jennifer Aniston’s instructor, Mandy Ingber, is almost like part of her family now. She credits yoga sessions with keeping her body toned and muscular – and if there’s anything other than her hair Aniston is known for, it’s her athletic shape that only seems to get better with age.
Bad boy Colin Farrell may be a new convert to the religion of yoga, but he’s been won over completely it seems. The actor said the movement calms him and likes being in a large class where everybody moves in unison. Speaking to Access Hollywood, Farrell said: “It takes you out of your head for a while and just puts you back in your body”.
Four years ago, Michelle Williams co-founded the Yoga for Single Moms project in Boston. The initiative provides free child care and classes for single mothers. In an interview with Marie Claire, the actress said yoga helped make her a better person and that it helped her cope with the death of her daughter’s father, actor Heath Ledger.
British comedian and actor Russell Brand says he has yoga to thank after the exercise helped him beat his drug addiction. Nowadays, he is often spotted attending yoga classes in LA and says the groups have helped him find spirituality. He is considering opening his own studio in the near future.
Irish model Roz Purcell is constantly in the spotlight. As such, she puts a lot of effort into keeping her physique in top shape. Yoga is a big part of her routine and she practises up to three times a week in addition to the gym. She says she doesn't go in for crash diets, preferring a balanced diet. She said: "I feel if I do exercise I can eat that little bit more!"
The Maroon 5 front man and judge for The Voice is a self-proclaimed yoga addict. He says yoga makes him a lot more focussed and helps him make better decisions. Last year he told Men’s Health magazine he does an hour of yoga, at least, before every performance. His favourite positions are Headstand, Half Moon and One-Legged Koundinyasana II.
Actress Jessica Biel is snapped at yoga class so often even the paparazzi have stopped following her! While Mrs Justin Timberlake is a fan of a wide range of exercises including jogging, boxing and playing volleyball, she cites yoga as her mainstay. In 2011 she told Elle magazine “yoga is a constant for me because it keeps my muscles long and flexible”.
Despite her assurance that she “isn’t a morning person” Gwyneth Paltrow gets up at 4:30 every morning to practise yoga. She says she’s very strict with herself about it and, coupled with clean eating and healthy living, feels much better in herself. She told In Style magazine “It’s just sheer determination”.
Spiderman baddie Willem Dafoe merits yoga with calming him down and helping him concentrate.
He says it allows him to direct his mind and informs his acting performances. Practising six days a week, Dafoe is as hardcore yoga as anyone can probably get! Apart from Gwyneth Paltrow of course.
Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen is a huge fan of yoga, particularly Anusara and prenatal yoga.
The mother-of-two regularly posts snaps of her and her friends enjoying open-air classes. She swears by one hour of yoga every day, cutting down to three times a week during pregnancy.
I bet you never thought Woody Harrelson would be on this list! The actor says yoga forces him outside his “mental and physical rigidity” allowing his mind to relax and flow freely.
