Winter cereal and new potatoes doing well

MOST winter cereal crops have good yield potential, according to Teagasc advisers. In contrast, many spring barley crops are reckoned to have limited yield potential.

Feeding aphids were becoming numerous in winter wheat.

Maize growth has been excellent, with many crops two to three weeks higher than normal, but follow-up herbicides may be needed where weed control was difficult, especially under plastic.

Most fodder beet crops have grown exceptionally well over the past two weeks.

With harvesting of early potatoes in full swing, above average yields were reported. Main crops are growing strongly but the water deficit is beginning to take effect. Blight levels were low.
