MORE pressure on prices has been the general tone of the trade for lambs this week.
Most of the plants have reduced their quoted prices by around 5 cents/kg (2p/lb), with wider than normal quoted price variation emerging.
At the upper end of the trade, the Co Kildare based Mayvalley Meats, qouting an all-in 360 cents/kg (128p/lb) on Monday, was unchanged from last week.
Most of the other processors were offering 350 cents/kg plus bonus, and some slipped back to 345 cents/kg (123p/lb) plus bonus.
In the marts, the trade for lambs was steady at some centres, and quieter at others, early this week.
Trade was reported to be steady at Corrin (Fermoy) on Monday, with butchers’ lambs ranging from €80 to €100 per head, or €28 over to €67 over.
The factory lambs sold for up to €76 per head, making up to €21 over.
There was a large sale of 1,220 head at Kilkenny Mart on Monday, where the trade was quieter for all lambs.
Butchers lambs sold for €27 over to €35 over. Factory lambs made €26 over to €31 over. The store lambs ranged from €10 over to €31 over.
In Britain, supplies at the live markets were stronger throughout last week. Combined with the weakening in sterling, this resulted in prices easing to the equivalent of around 360c/kg (128p/lb) including VAT.
In France, market demand showed some signs of easing during last week, while British lamb prices became more competitive.
Generally, Irish Grade 1 lambs delivered eased in the market as the week progressed, to about 380c/kg (136p/lb) by the weekend.
