State veterinary services promoted at Sheep event

The services available from the Veterinary Laboratory Service of the Department of Agriculture were promoted at the Sheep 2012 event in Co Galway.

Services are available from the central veterinary research laboratory at Backweston and six regional veterinary laboratories in Athlone, Backweston, Cork, Kilkenny, Limerick and Sligo.

They offer a laboratory diagnostic, investigative and consultancy service to the livestock industry through veterinary practitioners, and provide technical and logistical support to the State veterinary service for its regulatory role in animal disease.

They monitor and collate information on diseases at a national level and identify the presence of new and re-emerging diseases which may have implications for animal and public health and maintenance of the country’s high animal health status.

Details of the diagnostic services, including cost and how to submit samples for testing, can be found on the Department of Agriculture’s website, www.agriculture.ie
