Fenelon takes on food research at Teagasc
Teagasc has appointed Dr Mark Fenelon as head of food research, with a plan to work closely with industry and academic partners.
Still limited by the public sector recruitment embargo, Teagasc had a special sanction to advertise externally. Dr Fenelon emerged from that process. The Teagasc Authority approved the appointment at a meeting yesterday in Tinahely, Co Wicklow.
Since joining Teagasc in 2005, Dr Fenelon has formed a number of large collaborative projects with the dairy and infant formula sector. He will be based in Moorepark in Fermoy, Co Cork, and will manage the food research centre.
He will lead Teagasc’s research input in the new dairy processing technology centre. He will help develop Moorepark Technology Ltd, a joint venture pilot plant, helping food companies scale up research and new product testing.
Teagasc director Prof Gerry Boyle said: “We have ambitious plans to build on the existing successful Teagasc food programme. Mark’s connections with the food industry will ensure we work closely with food companies to generate new knowledge and apply it to develop the Irish processing sector.”
Dr Fenelon will provide overall leadership for the Teagasc food research programme which is delivered at the two research centres — Moorepark in Cork and Ashtown in Dublin.
He joined Teagasc as a senior research officer in Moorepark, before being promoted to principal research officer and head of the food chemistry and technology department in Teagasc.
He has previously worked for Wyeth Nutritionals. The food research programme in Teagasc has 130 staff and 70 PhD students at its two sites, and a budget of €17m. Dr Fenlon, right,
holds a PhD, a diploma in Processing and Chemical Engineering, and a degree in Food Science and Technology, all UCC.
