Macra plea for young farmers

Macra na Feirme says the 2016 National Reserve fund must target young farmers to help them get established in the industry.

Macra says €8m of top-up funds for young farmers, unused in 2015, is being redistributed to all farmers.

It says the 2016 National Reserve should focus on young farmers with its provisions.

Macra president, Sean Finan, said: “The stop-start nature of measures in recent years has seen many young farmers fall through the cracks.

"Young farmers have missed out on Installation Aid and National Reserve in some years, creating an uneven playing field.”

The Macra na Feirme leader will make a case for better young farmer funding in a meeting with the Department of Agriculture tomorrow in Portlaoise.
