Focus on farm safety

Galway-based farmer Peter Gohery recalled the trauma of losing his leg in a farm accident to help IFA launch Farm Safety Week, which continues until Friday.

Mr Gohery said he will never forget the day in 2009 when he got caught in an unguarded power take-off (PTO) on his tractor.

He lost one leg above the knee, and praises the quick thinking of his then 10-year-old son Ryan, who saved his life by switching off the tractor and running for help.

Mr Gohery says he is lucky to be alive.

He now devotes time speaking to farmers and agricultural students about the need to implement safety measures.
