Macra members from across the country headed to Dundalk last weekend for the Louth Macra Young Farmers’ Development Group’s farm safety information evening.
Pat Griffin of the Health and Safety Authority give a detailed report on the many problems faced on Irish farms on a daily basis.
Three local men, John Mc Donnell, Tom Hoey, and Kevin Mc Enteggart, spoke of how farm accidents had, or almost had, changed their lives forever.
Brian Rohan of Embrace, a support group for those affected by farm accidents, gave an overview of the work the organisation is doing with the families that are left behind.
The night concluded with contributions from the crowd on personal farm experiences and an open discussion on health and safety issues.
A crew from UTV was present on the night, and it is hoped a report on the evening will feature in the upcoming Rare Breed series, which is set to be broadcast in the new year.
Meanwhile, Sligo Macra na Feirme members hosted a special anniversary dinner dance to celebrate 70 years of the organisation in the county at the weekend.
Co Sligo has a very proud tradition of Macra and has seven active clubs dotted around the county.
Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney was guest of honour at the gala celebration.
The first Macra national president from Sligo, Kieran O’Dowd, was also in present at the event whichtook place in the Sligo Park Hotel.
The evening included a four-course meal and music by The Curly Bobs, as well as a DJ, with the dancing continuing into the early hours. A special display area also allowed past members to take a trip down memory lane, with scrapbooks, photographs, minute books and other memorabilia taking centre stage.
Sligo members are also putting together a book on the history of Macra in the county.
The booklet is sure to be a great resource for Sligo Macra clubs in the years to come, as well as an absolute treasure for past Sligo Macra members to relive their happy days in Macra na Feirme.
