Dairygold: No shortcuts in quality milk systems

Quality milk producers don’t take shortcuts, according to Dairygold’s overall 2014 Milk Quality award winner.

Dan Dennehy said: “To achieve high quality milk you cannot take shortcuts, you must complete all parts of the jigsaw to get the desired result.”

Dan Dennehy farms with his wife Valerie and three children — Claire, Michael and Colm — in Aghabullogue in Mid-Cork. They milk 130 cows and carry 35 to 40 replacements on 150 acres.

The Dennehys are hosting a farm walk next Tuesday, September 1, 11am, for the Teagasc and Dairygold joint development programme.

Dairygold stated: “We are inviting all dairy farmers to come see the award-winning Dennehy farm and herd of high EBI pedigree cows producing very high quality milk. Listen to the Dennehy family tell their story of how they do it.”

In 2014, the Dennehys’ farm yield of milk solids produced was 471 KgMS/Cow, (5900 litres milk @ 4.25% fat and 3.5% protein) despite quota constraints. The herd is predicted to produce more than 500 KgMS/cow in 2015 and almost 1,300 kgMS/ha.

The average SCC of milk supplied in 2014 was 120,000. The 130 cows are milked through a 14-unit milking parlour with a sequential bailing system.

The herd has an EBI of €181 (fertility sub–index: €104; milk solids production sub–index: €51). The 35 AI-bred replacement heifers have an EBI of €215.
