The chief executive of a global company based in Causeway, Co Kerry, will be one of the invited speakers at the prestigious Oxford Farming Conference which opens tomorrow and continues until Thursday.
Dr Edmond Harty is the chief executive and technical director of Dairymaster, a multi-award-winner in dairy equipment manufacturing.
The company, founded in 1968 by his father Ned, has operations in Britain, the US, and Ireland, as well as customers in over 40 countries.
Dr Harty, whose awards include the international and overall Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, will address the conference on Thursday on the overall theme of ambitious agriculture.
His specific paper, Advanced Performance Monitoring in Livestock — New Sensors and the Connected Farm, will be delivered in a session with the title of ‘Smart Farming — Guardian of the Environment’.
Dairymaster is a world leader in technology for dairy farming through Dr Harty’s leadership and the advances and innovations he has introduced.
While completing his PhD in University College Dublin he developed a new method for milking unit performance evaluation which have now been adopted into international standards.
Dairymaster applies physics, chemistry, mechanics, software, electronics, and fluid dynamics to an industry in need of technological revolutions.
Dr Harty was the youngest person appointed to three global scientific dairy committees: The International Dairy Federation, the ISO standards, and the US-based National Mastitis Council .
He is certified to install and test milking equipment, is a chartered engineer and fellow of Engineers Ireland and is also a board member of Agri Aware, which educates consumers about agriculture.
Over the past five decades, Dairymaster, which employs 300 people, has researched all aspects of dairy farming and dairy herd management from its in-house R&D department.
It has developed unique technologically advanced solutions aimed at making dairy farming more profitable by reducing long-term costs and labour inputs.
