Criminality in Ireland - An in-depth nationwide analysis

Crime affects us all. No town, city, community or county is immune.

Against a background of falling garda numbers and growing public concern, particularly in rural areas, we wanted to look behind the headline figures and analysis crime trends.

In partnership with The All-Island Research Observatory (AIRO) based at NUI Maynooth and using figures collated by the Central Statistics Office from

2008-2012, we profile crime in each county, track the main trends and rank each area across the 15 main crime categories - allowing you to measure how your county fares versus national trends.

The user-friendly graphics give you a snapshot of specific crimes - such as sexual assaults, public order offences and theft - over the past five years.

As well as recording the total number of offences in each crime category, you can see what crimes are up

or down, how your county compares with other parts of the country per head of population and the impact the cutbacks have had on the number of gardai on the beat.

Our drop down menus and interactive map also allows users to monitor crime levels not just at county level but across individual Garda divisions in each county - so you can compare Blackrock in Cork City to Blackrock in Dublin - Clonakilty in West Cork, to Croom in Co Limerick.
