Button Cottage in Union Hall isn’t the ordinary terraced house it used to be — it’s been given pizzazz by a UK owner who works in movie set design and costumes.

Involved in supervising set design for both TV and movies, he was the costume master on the movie One Day starring Anne Hathaway in 2011, just two years before he bought his two-bed West Cork home.

Upgrading, extending and modernising, he decorated with style and flair adding a few theatrical touches including a chandelier in the country-style kitchen, tropical wallpaper in the hallway, and an elaborate carved bed upstairs.

He also gave a whole new look to the harbour-side back garden with decking and patio furniture.

Seeking offers of €195,000, Pat Maguire auctioneers say this is a gorgeous waterside cottage in a fantastic West Cork location.

“It’s on the main street within minutes from all amenities including the fish shop and the village’s three pubs,” says Mr Maguire, adding that it’s also within a few kilometres from Glandore.

Prettified with planters at the front, the two-bed property has approximately 1,000 sq ft of living space and has been fitted with double-glazed windows, gas heating and has also been insulated.

The front hallway leads through to a long timber-floored sitting room which has a stove, some antique furniture, book shelves and, on the walls, a multitude of paintings, prints and photographs.

To the rear, in an extension with roof lights, is a pretty country-style kitchen with cream units, sage green walls, granite and timber worktops, a dresser and an elaborate glass light fitting.

Double French doors lead out on to a patio with a glass roof which provides a sheltered dining area with views all the way across to the other side of the lagoon.

The owner says this is the perfect space for entertaining guests.

The extension also provided space for the addition of a ground floor bedroom with an en suite.

Upstairs, the owner turned the existing two bedrooms into a 22 ft long one, painted the floorboards and decorated in cream and gold.

An elegant room with window seats and exposed beams, it has cream fitted wardrobes and an elaborate gold cane bed carved with garlands and swags.

At this level, there’s also a modern bathroom with a shower.

Enclosed by hedging, the garden at the rear has been totally covered with decking and, because it’s West Cork, planted with some fuchsia and hydrangea.

Moving away from West Cork, the owner says that he will miss living at the water’s edge and being able to watch the birds bobbing on the water as he eats breakfast in the garden.

When he first first viewed the property it was dilapidated and uninhabitable but he loved the view of the water.

“Carrying out renovations there were trials and tribulations but it was all worth it because of the water — properties with access to the water are very hard to find.”

Mr Maguire said that as a West Cork holiday home this is stylish, well-located and keenly-priced and is attracting attention.

VERDICT: Cute enough for its name
