A piece of paradise on the Silver Coast

Luxury accommodation at Praia d’El Rey where the beach is right outside your balcony.

ALTHOUGH there is no doubt that the Algarve is the premium brand in Portuguese tourism, the coasts north and south of Lisbon have been raising their profile significantly over the past decade. The Silver Coast, or Costa da Prata, stretches north from Lisbon along the coast of central Portugal running from the Portuguese capital as far as Porto. Although it doesn’t get the high temperatures of the Algarve — which is actually a blessing in the summer — it enjoys an excellent climate and has the added advantage of proximity to the historic and picturesque city of Lisbon, which is always worth a visit.

The part best known to Irish visitors is the stretch about an hour north of Lisbon where you will find some stunning beaches and a selection of incredibly good golf courses including Praia d’El Rey which won both European Golf Resort of the Year and Portugal’s Leading Resort at the World Travel Awards in 2007. For golf aficionados there are also nearby courses at Bom Sucesso, the formerly Westin branded Campo Real and a new course is under construction at Royal Obidos. There is also a selection of courses around Lisbon itself.

Praia D’El Rey’s Golf & Beach Resort is one of the more upmarket resorts on Portugal’s Silver Coast. The Marriott branded hotel complex comes with its own championship links golf course, luxury accommodation, a high-end spa and a range of outdoor activities. It also has a tennis academy and beach club. The resort is set on a sandy beach just under an hour from Lisbon, in an area of protected landscape containing rolling sand dunes and pine forests. The resort also claims a mature property portfolio, as there has been building here for many years. There have been over 800 villas, townhouses and apartments constructed around the highly-rated course.

The latest offering is unusual in Portugal, because it is located on the beach. It has been able to achieve this due to legacy planning permission which has been activated to give a development closer to the beach than anything else allowed in the Iberian Peninsula these days. The development, The Beachfront, is positioned around an infinity pool and terrace with unobstructed beach and ocean views as well as walkways with direct beach access. Owners also have access to a private gym.

Sonia Dallot of Praia d’El Rey says the latest eco-construction techniques are being used to minimise energy waste and maximise utilisation of natural sunlight and sea breezes. There are to be 29 furnished units in total, incorporating two, three and four bedroom villas and townhouses. All have frontline sea views and will be furnished and maintained according to Marriott’s five-star standards. For those interested in getting some return from their investment, there is the option of a 5% per annum guaranteed rental income for the first three years. Prices start at €489,500 for a 180 sq m two-bed townhouse.
