VODAFONE increased its customer base by 10% to 2.35 million in the last three months, but the company made less money on each person.
This is despite people using 17% more text messages and 3% more voice minutes than in the same quarter the previous year.
Irish customers sent over 1.29 billion text messages and used 1.64 billion voice minutes in the three months to the end of June, according to Vodafone. This is well above the European average.
Vodafone Ireland’s customers used on average 263 voice minutes and 201 text messages each month.
In the same period, average blended monthly ARPU, which is how the company calculates what it makes on each customer, decreased by just over 9% to €35.10.
Vodafone said it delivered around 20% better value to its customers in the last quarter.
It now has 300,000 smartphones on its network and is launching the iPhone 4 on Friday next week.
On a group level Vodafone, which is the world’s largest mobile phone company, unexpectedly returned to service revenue growth after a year and a half, riding demand for Apple’s iPhone.
Service revenue, excluding currency swings and acquisitions, in the three months ended June 30 rose 1.1% to £10.6 billion (€12.6bn), beating analysts’ estimates for a 0.4% drop. The company said it will announce a new strategy focusing on its mix of assets and data use.
