Charleville engineering company BCD has announced the creation of 40 jobs as a result of a new multi-million euro project, but it may have to look abroad for adequately trained staff.
The company, which already employs 190 people, offers solutions to pharmaceutical companies from the design stage through to installation in factories involving precision engineering, production management and process design.
BCD CEO Sean McGowan said that the new jobs based in Charleville will be a mix of high-value engineering positions and skilled crafts roles which will see the a number of apprentices hires across a number trades.
Following recent pharmaceutical and biotechnology project wins in the Irish, UK and Belgium markets Mr McGowan is confident that BCD will continue to expand internationally.
“The outlook looks very positive based on our investment in a number of new processes that has opened up new international and sector opportunities. We also continue to enjoy strong working relationships with some of the largest Irish players in the market that provide the backbone to our business,” he said.
Mr McGowan said the company is winning work but the scarcity of available engineers here may force the company to look overseas to fill a number of the roles.
“These new contract wins will create high value roles for the area, however, the industry as a whole is encountering problems in filling these types of positions. There is a widespread problem caused by emigration resulting in indigenous engineering companies like ourselves struggling to fill the roles due to an industry engineering skills shortage,” he said. Despite the shortage of engineers Mr McGowan said the announcement of new work would safeguard jobs in the Charleville area.
“This year BCD celebrated 30 years in operation. The long-term impact on the local area is evident by the generations of families who have worked in the company. This announcement will safeguard local employment with a further direct impact on local businesses and suppliers,” he said.
