AirSpeed Telecom sales director Brendan Martin talks to Vincent Ryan about his busy working day

MORNING:

I get up at 7am and have breakfast with my kids, check over my emails and then it’s into the office for a busy day ahead. As the sales director at AirSpeed Telecom, I spend a lot of time out of the office meeting existing and potential customers — a very important and also very enjoyable part of my job. We work with companies across the entire business spectrum — from large enterprises and government bodies to smaller SMEs.

After checking in with the sales team and sorting through any issues they might have, I’m either off to meet with a client or I’m in the office to work with the team on specific projects or sales proposals.

Customer meetings are usually about how we can use our licensed network to deliver reliable, secure and scalable telecommunications to meet their business needs — that could be linking up various business locations onto a single network platform or providing resilient back up links for business continuity purposes. Often businesses won’t have access to fibre or may have a site in a tricky location; then I’ll work with our engineering team to see how best to service that site both technically and cost effectively.

If I’m in the office for the morning, then my time could be spent on a range of activities. We’re rapidly expanding the network and I’m responsible for developing associated new business.

I always hold my sales team meetings in the morning where we’ll discuss targets, results achieved and opportunities for new business.

AFTERNOON:

As we do a lot of business with government departments, my afternoon could be spent compiling a response to a government tender or meeting with the IT manager of a government agency to discuss their options and network solutions. I’ll work with our engineering design team to craft the best network solution.

We’ve also just launched our Cloud Connect services — transit for customers to and from their cloud service with great service guarantees. I’ve been working with both our technical and marketing teams to devise two new innovative products — AirSpeed Cloud Connect and AirSpeed Resilient Circuit — which deliver significant benefits to support HD voice, video and time critical applications. To tie in with this, we are also preparing to exhibit at the upcoming Cloud Computing Summit on Sept 8 in Croke Park. I’ll be working at our stand that day and will enjoy meeting businesses to talk about what they plan to do in the cloud.

A good deal of my time is also spent meeting with key suppliers like Ceragon Networks — I’m an engineer myself so I’m well positioned to feed market requirements into discussions about design of new features on our network.

EVENING:

On a Wednesday, I leave the office on time to make a training session with the local U12 hurling team, but most days I try not to work too late.

I strive to achieve a good balance between my work and home life. Sometimes it’s nice when these overlap, such as the recent opportunity to spend the weekend at the Oxegen festival. AirSpeed Telecom provided all the telecommunications requirements at Oxegen 2011 — essentially the equivalent to a telephone exchange on site. This was connected to our network and ensured high speed bandwidth which added considerably to the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the event for the organisers as well as retailers and commercial partners.
