Tory pig race event to go ahead despite David Cameron allegations

A Conservative party group has promised a fundraising pig race event will go ahead despite reports it had been cancelled in the wake of allegations about David Cameron’s student days.

The Dewsbury County Conservative Association, in West Yorkshire, had planned a pig race fundraising evening next month but Facebook users today received a message claiming the event had been cancelled.

The group later went on Twitter to reassure people that the “exciting and unpredictable evening” would go ahead as planned.

The “premature” cancellation of the event came after allegations made in a new book by the billionaire businessman and former Conservative Party treasurer Lord Ashcroft that Mr Cameron took part in a student initiation ritual which involved him inserting “a private part of his anatomy” in the mouth of a dead pig.

But the Dewsbury Tories replied to the cancellation rumours by tweeting: “The event is still going ahead – someone was a bit premature with Facebook.”

A message about the event, posted on the group’s website on September 8, says: “We will be holding a pig race evening. This promises to be an exciting and unpredictable evening.”

Racegoers will be provided with pulled pork sandwiches as part of the £7.50 entry fee.
