Theresa May appoints a new northern secretary

Update 4.30pm: British Prime Minister Theresa May has appointed a new northern secretary.

James Brokenshire is a former Minister for Security and Immigration.

Update 4.20pm: Theresa May's old leadership contender - Andrea Leadsom (pictured) - has been appointed Environment Secretary in the new British Cabinet.

The Prime Minister's been naming her top team all day - with Michael Gove, Nicky Morgan and John Whittingdale all sacked.

Earlier Northern Secretary Theresa Villiers (pictured) has resigned from the UK government, saying she was offered a job by new Prime Minister Theresa May but decided not to take it.

She is one of a number of high profile politicians to jump or be pushed, as the Prime Minister puts the finishing touches to the new British cabinet.

There is no place for Michael Gove or Education Secretary Nicky Moran. John Whittingdale has left his role as Culture Secretary.

The biggest surprise so far has been the appointment of Boris Johnson as the new Foreign Secretary.

Philip Hammond has been appointed as Chancellor of the exchequer - Amber Rudd has been named Home Secretary - and the new Secretary of State for International Trade is Liam Fox.
