Syrian regime 'ready to discuss' Assad resignation

A leading Syrian minister has indicated that President Assad could step down as part of a negotiated settlement to the 17-month uprising against his rule.

The comments, made by Syria's Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil, come following talks with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov.

Speaking after the meeting, Jamil said the Syrian regime was "ready to discuss the issue".

However, he rejected the idea of making Assad's resignation the condition for any future negotiations.
