Putin applauds end of missile scheme

Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin praised America’s decision to scrap plans for a missile defence system in Europe and urged it to cancel trade restrictions with Russia today.

Mr Putin hailed President Barack Obama’s move as “right and brave” and said that it has raised hope the US administration also will move to better links between the countries.

Mr Putin said Moscow also expected the US to give the go-ahead to World Trade Organisation membership for Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Russia has spent years trying to get the US to scrap a handful of restrictive laws on bilateral trade, including a Cold War-era amendment that has been a key irritant in relations between Moscow and Washington.
