Pope to visit Africa next year

The Pope is to make his first papal visit to Africa next year.

Benedict XVI made the surprise announcement at the end of his homily in St Peter's Basilica, during a closing ceremony for three weeks of discussions by bishops from around the world about the Bible.

The 81-year-old pontiff will visit Cameroon and Angola sometime in 2009.
