Pair accused of kicking heavily pregnant woman refused bail

Two young men accused of kicking a heavily pregnant woman in south-east London causing the death of her unborn baby have appeared before the Old Bailey today.

Kevin Wilson, 22, who is believed to be the child's father, and a 17-year-old boy appeared in the dock each charged with causing grievous bodily harm to 21-year-old Malorie Bantala and child destruction.

Miss Bantala was set upon by two people wearing motorbike helmets on the morning of June 15 this year in Talfourd Place, Peckham.

The victim, who was 32 weeks pregnant at the time, was jumped on and kicked on the ground in front of shocked passers by.

During the hearing, Judge Rebecca Poulet QC rejected an application for bail for the younger defendant after setting a plea and case management hearing for September 28.

A provisional trial date of November 30 was confirmed to take place at the Old Bailey.

Wilson, of the Longfield Estate, Bermondsey, south-east London, and the 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were remanded in custody.
