A spokeswoman for the German Chancellor is denying Angela Merkel suggested that Greece hold a referendum on its euro membership alongside general elections next month.
The Greek Prime Minister's office claimed earlier that Chancellor Merkel made the suggestion in a phone conversation this afternoon.
But a spokesperson for the German leader says the information is wrong.
Meanwhile, French President Francois Hollande says he and US President Barack Obama share the "same conviction" that Greece should remain in the eurozone.
In the pair's first meeting at the White House, the French leader pledged that growth must be the priority, maintaining his stance that austerity measures alone would not be enough to reverse the crisis in Europe.
