A man has died after being gored in a bull run near the southern Spanish city of Alicante.

The incident occurred at about 1am on Saturday during late-night festivities in the small village of Pedreguera.

A heifer gored the 29-year-old, from Valencia, through the thorax and abdomen, the Red Cross said.

The man was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Alicante has suspended all bull-related festivities for the day.

Last year, another man also died after being gored during one of its bull runs.
