Iran has said it will return two small US navy boats “safely and promptly” after American officials lost contact with the vessels in the Persian Gulf, the Pentagon said.

Spokesman Peter Cook said the boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the US lost contact with them.

Mr Cook said: “We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly.”
