Gunman reported as US college in lockdown

A US university has been locked down as police respond to a report of a possible gunman there.

Central Connecticut State University spokesman Mark McLaughlin says somebody was seen “either with a gun or was thought to have a gun”.

Jordan Governale, a 20-year-old junior from Farmington, says he saw a man carrying a backpack and a sword and sheath strapped to his back.

He says the man was wearing a mask, camouflage trousers, knee pads and a vest resembling body armour.

Students on the New Britain campus are being urged to remain indoors and away from windows.

More than 12,000 students attend the university, which has a 182-acre campus.

Lt Paul Vance, a state police spokesman, says university police asked for assistance related to a report of a suspicious person.
