French cabinet hits back at EU criticism of gypsies crackdown

French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s office today hit back at European Commission criticism of the country’s crackdown on gypsies, or Roma, saying some of the complaints were “unacceptable”.

EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding has said France’s expulsions of Roma to Eastern Europe are “a disgrace” and something she thought Europe would not have to witness again after World War Two.

A top official at the French presidential palace said today that France does not want a spat with the commission but that some of the comments were “simply unacceptable”.

French authorities have recently dismantled more than 100 illegal camps and deported more than 1,000 Roma, mainly back to Romania.
