Four children die as fire engulfs 10 houses in the US

A fast-moving fire has killed four children and burned through a row of houses in the US.

Four other people were injured in the blaze, which engulfed 10 houses in south-west Philadelphia and destroyed eight of them, fire department officials said.

The fire started shortly before 3am this morning and was brought under control by about 4am. It is not yet clear what caused the blaze.

Jeff Boone told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he saw a settee on fire on the porch of a house about five doors down from his residence. He also said he heard children screaming.

Fire commissioner Derrick Sawyer said: “This is a tragic, tragic day for the city of Philadelphia. We lost four children today.”
