Five arrests after 'shots fired at police' in Washington

Five people have been arrested in Washington after shots were allegedly fired at police officers.

No injuries were reported in the incident this morning.

It follows protests over police killings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota and the fatal shooting of five police officers in Dallas last week.

Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said officers were responding to reports of gunshots in south-east Washington.

When officers arrived in marked police cruisers, people began shooting at them from inside an SUV.

Mr Sternbeck said police returned fire at the suspects, who barricaded themselves inside the vehicle.

Police ordered the people to come out, but they refused.

After about 30 minutes, three women and two men inside the SUV surrendered.

Mr Sternbeck said it is not clear why they fired on officers.

The investigation will include whether they were involved in any other crimes before police arrived.
