Civilians in eastern Congo say heavy fighting has erupted after more than 100 armed men disguised in women’s clothing entered the country from Rwanda.
Residents say the fighting between government forces and the M23 rebels continued this morning after starting on yesterday afternoon.
Bifumbu Ruhira, a farmer at Kanyarucinya village, on the front line between the Congolese army and the M23 rebels, said the men arriving from Rwanda were wearing females’ headscarves and kikwembe, a kind of Congolese wraparound dress worn by women.
Another resident, Bakari Murefu, said the armed men reinforced the M23 rebels.
United Nations experts allege that Rwandan soldiers have joined the M23 rebels in recent months, a claim Rwanda denies.
Both sides blame each other for the renewed fighting.
