Eight killed in blast in Indian bakery

An explosion in a bakery has killed eight people and injured 32 others in the western Indian city of Pune.

Ashok Chavan, the top elected official of Maharashtra state, says police were investigating whether it was a cooking gas cylinder that exploded by accident or a bomb.

The blast occurred in German Bakery, close to the Osho Ashram frequented by foreigners.

Press Trust of India quoted Rajender Sonawania, a top police officer, as saying that the initial indications were that it was a bomb blast.

A senior official later said the blast was caused by a bomb.

At least one foreigner was believed to be among those killed.

The bakery and some nearby shops were badly damaged. Most of the victims were in the bakery at the time of the explosion.

“I was travelling by an auto-rickshaw. I heard a loud explosion and the ground shook,” said Santosh Kumar, who was injured in the blast.

He said the incident occurred at about 7pm local time (1.30pm Irish time).

The nearby Osho Ashram is a mediation centre of a famed Indian guru often frequented by foreigners.

Officials said India’s financial hub Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra state have been put on high alert following the blast.
