Edward Snowden seeks 'no extradition' guarantee in bid to get prize in Norway

A lawsuit has been filed asking an Oslo court to ensure that Edward Snowden can travel to Norway to receive an award without the risk of being extradited to the United States.

Lawyers at the Schjodt law firm in Oslo said they filed the petition on behalf of Snowden and the Norwegian PEN group, which has invited him to receive its Ossietzky Prize in November.

The petition seeks a "declaratory judgment" stating that Snowden, currently in Russia, cannot be extradited to the US, lawyer Halvard Helle said.

The former National Security Agency contractor leaked details of a secret government eavesdropping programme in 2013 and left the country.

He faces US charges that could result in a prison term of up to 30 years.
