Defendant shot dead outside Mississippi court

A defendant has been shot dead outside a court in Mississippi.

A suspect is in custody following the incident in Canton, Madison County sheriff Randy Tucker said.

The suspect fired one shot with a handgun, Mr Tucker said, and the man was hit in the chest and died at the scene. Neither man has been identified.

Mr Tucker and Madison County district attorney Michael Guest said they do not know the motive for the shooting.

The suspect laid down the handgun and was arrested without a struggle, Mr Tucker said.

The victim had been due to appear in court on a case for which he had been indicted on drug charges.

Prosecutors expected him to reject a plea offer and the judge would have set the case for trial, Mr Guest said.
