Chavez backs Iran

Venezuela's socialist leader defended Iran's nuclear ambitions as peaceful and accused the United States of unjustly imposing new sanctions on the Islamic republic.

President Hugo Chavez, an ally of Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said the United States is conspiring to undermine Iran's government.

Mr Chavez said the US Treasury Department should not be imposing sanctions against Iran.
