Brock Turner has walked free - 3 months after being jailed for sexual assault

A former Stanford University student who sexually assaulted an unconscious woman on campus has been released from jail.

Brock Turner was released early for good behaviour after serving three months of a six-month sentence that was handed down in June.

He did not give a statement as he left Santa Clara County jail, where he had been held in protective custody. Instead, he walked straight to a waiting white SUV, which was swiftly driven away.

The case was followed across the world after the victim's impact statement, in which she criticised his defence and not-guilty plea, went viral.

Turner was convicted of one count of assault with intent to rape, one count of penetrating an intoxicated person with a foreign object and one charge of penetrating an unconscious person with a foreign object.

Judge Aaron Persky, who sentenced Turner, has faced mounting pressure to resign. A petition to recall him from his position gained more than 1.5 million signatures.
