British Labour leadership contest to be decided today

The result of the Labour leadership contest in the UK will be announced at about 4.30pm today.

Brothers David and Ed Miliband are current favourites to take on the role of opposition leader. Other candidates include Ed Balls, Diane Abbott and Andy Burnham.

David Miliband was the early front-runner to replace Gordon Brown as Labour leader and quickly scooped up MPs’ nominations.

But as the contest wore on, brother Ed was increasingly snapping at his heels amid tales – hotly denied by the two – of family friction between brothers-at-war.

Leading Blairite David, 44, was a close ally of Tony Blair from the earliest days of New Labour, working for him in opposition from 1994 and heading the No 10 policy unit during his first term in power.

Ed Miliband grew closer to Gordon Brown after becoming a special adviser to the then chancellor in the late Nineties.

The pair, sons of Marxist writer Ralph Miliband, followed near-identical paths to the Labour Cabinet table.

Both attended Haverstock Comprehensive School in north London and both studied philosophy, politics and economics at the same Oxford college.
