Antarctic lake drill project abandoned

A project to drill into an Antarctic lake has been abandoned for the season.

The decision was made on Christmas day, after the team - headed by the British Antarctic Survey - failed to link two boreholes.

The aim was to drill through three kilometres of sheet ice to search for signs of life in a lake, untouched for half a million years.
