18-year-old woman killed in random shooting

A gunman in southern Finland has killed one person and wounded eight others in what appears to be a random shooting, police said today.

The 18-year-old man shot at people from a low rooftop in central Hyvinkaa, some 30 miles north of the capital, Helsinki, said Markku Tuominen, officer in charge of the investigation.

The suspect was arrested early today, he said. He did not resist arrest.

An 18-year-old woman was killed in the shootings, Tuominen said. Two people were critically injured, including a police officer who arrived at the scene soon after Hyvinkaa police received an alert early Friday.
