12 killed in Gaza airstrikes

The death toll from a series of Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza strip has risen to 12 militants.

Palestinian health official Adham Abu Salmiya said the men were killed in seven airstrikes overnight and this morning.

The flare-up began yesterday when an Israeli airstrike targeted Zuhair al-Qaissi, the commander of one of the militant groups behind the abduction of an Israeli soldier.

Gilad Schalit was held captive for five years and was ultimately swapped for about 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.

Al-Qaissi’s killing prompted Palestinian militants in Gaza to fire over 50 rockets at Israel so far, seriously wounding one Israeli civilian.

It was the highest profile Israeli strike against militants in the coastal strip in several months.
