Letter to the Editor: Sensible science on easing of Covid-19 restrictions

“Then, we can expect restrictions far more severe and of longer duration than those we may be prematurely lifting now” ‘Lifting pandemic restrictions, scientists urge elimination’ (Irish Examiner, Editorial, June 9)

Your apposite flagging of a vital and seriously salient assessment commentary by a raft of informed and experienced biomedical scientists is to be lauded, learned from and listened to by all and sundry.

They did not formulate their prudent prescriptive projections for any personal self-gain or distorted rationale, merely from a measured and factual reality.

They included an economic strain to their prognostications, highlighting the comparative financial implications of which ‘easing’ options are engaged with or without elimination on the Covid-19 virus.

Thus, their advisories cannot blithely be ignored on the basis that they are ‘test-tube addicts’ with little notion or respect for economic reverberation.

They offer a much wiser template of guidance, contrasting with the slew of economy-oriented vested interests who are peppering the airwaves with demands for accelerated easing of concessions.

One surely has to hope their collective voice will be fully heard, respected and acted upon, and not have to await a ‘pyrrhic’ vindication when their credible projections come to pass.
