Winston Central to Ascot success

South Central just held on to oblige for favourite-backers in the Norfolk Stakes, the opening event of day three at Royal Ascot.

Sent off the 11/4 market leader, Robert Winston set out to make all on Howard Johnson’s charge, powering away in front before kicking on a furlong and a half out.

The Forest Camp colt, Johnston’s second winner of the Norfolk after Masta Plasta’s success for the same connections in 2005, had to dig deep though as Spin Cycle hit top gear in the closing stages.

However, the youngster just prevailed by a head with Prolific also finishing to good effect a further length away in third.
