Wells team mull Ayr run

Cesarewitch fancy Wells Lyrical could warm up for the tote-sponsored marathon at Newmarket with a run at Ayr on Thursday.

The Northumberland Plate runner-up has been given an entry in the victorchandler.com Handicap over an extended one mile and five furlongs after being taken out of Sunday’s Fenwolf Stakes at Ascot because of the fear of quick conditions.

“The ground’s too fast and he has got an entry at Ayr for next Thursday,” said Mike Gorvin, racing secretary to trainer Bryan Smart.

“The weather potentially is going to break in the second half of next week. There is some suggestion from the Met Office there is going to be some unsettled weather about.

“It was just down to the ground at Ascot. From the weather forecast from there it will be very quick.

“The Cesarewitch is still the target.”

Wells Lyrical, who was third in a Listed race at Sandown in July on his latest start, is a best-priced 12-1 for the Cesarewitch on October 17 for which he was allotted 8st 7lb.
