VIDEO: Athlete takes gold despite losing shoe mid-race

US college athlete Justyn Knight showed true grit to win the 1500 metres at the ACC track championships on Saturday - going over the line wearing only one shoe.

The Syracuse University athlete lost his right spike midway through the race, but didn’t let it throw him off his stride.

“I went to the front,” he explained afterwards. “Someone took off my shoe by accident.

“I just had to fight for the rest of it, and I was able to close strong.”

He was determined not to let it cost him the race, although he admitted it wasn’t easy.

“It was tough because I didn’t have any grip, but I knew I didn’t want to come second without a shoe, so I had to come first.”

Knight won the race by a fraction of a second and joked about it later on Twitter.
