Venus Williams bounces back from doubles defeat in Italy

Venus Williams made up for defeat in the doubles to win her first-round singles match at the Italian Open.

Venus and sister Serena lost to Andreja Klepac and Katarina Srebotnik but the former made amends when she met Coco Vandeweghe, winning 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 28 minutes.

Qualifier Heather Watson ousted local favourite Sara Errani in three sets, winning 6-4 3-6 6-0, while 10th seed Lucie Safarova dispatched another Italian, Francesca Schiavone, 6-3 6-2.

Two seeds, Karolina Pliskova (16) and Elina Svitolina (15), did fall at the first hurdle.

Daria Kasatkina went over Pliskova 6-4 6-4, with Puerto Rico's Monica Puig beating Svitolina 6-1 4-6 6-1.

Former world number one Ana Ivanovic beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 6-4 and Madison Keys, Andrea Petkovic, Barbora Strycova, Ekaterina Makarova, Misaki Doi, Teliana Pereira, Irina-Camelia Begu and Anna-Lena Friedsam all progressed from their first-round matches without dropping a set.
