Trapattoni holds talks with Finnan, O'Brien and Ireland

Giovanni Trapattoni has held face-to-face meetings with Steve Finnan, Andy O'Brien and Stephen Ireland in an effort to convince them to rejoin the Republic of Ireland squad.

The new manager travelled to Manchester with Marco Tardelli and Liam Brady yesterday to meet the three players.

He later described the discussions as "very positive".

The Italian said there was a good possibility that the trio would return to play for their country.

A 28-strong squad is due to be announced next week for Ireland's forthcoming training camp in Portugal and subsequent friendly internationals.
