Team Ireland has its first finalists at the Paralympics

Team Ireland's James Scully has made it into the S-5 200-metre freestyle final at the Paralympics.

The Meath man swam a season's best time of 2:53.17 as he finished third in his heat.

The final is set for around midnight, Irish time.

In athletics, Greta Streimiktye has qualified for the final of the T13 1500m event on Saturday.

The Swords runner finished third in her heat with an Irish record time of 4.51.75.

Earlier, Team Ireland cyclists Damien Vereker and Sean Hahessy finished in 8th place in the tandem Pursuit qualifier.

They posted a time of four minutes and 20.139 seconds and will miss out on racing for a medal in cycling's Individual B Pursuit.

Back in the pool, Ailbhe Kelly finished seventh in her heat of the S8 400 freestyle event.

Her time of 5:41.36 meant she finished 13th overall.

Two-time 100-metre gold medallist, Jason Smyth begins his quest for a third tonight in the T-13 heats.

And at 6pm, the men's football side face Ukraine.
