Cork soccer star makes history in US

Cork soccer star Megan Connolly has made soccer history in the United States.

The former College Corinthians player was named a 2015 First Team All-American this weekend by the National Soccer Coaches' Association for her performances with Florida State (FSU) this season, becoming the first ever freshman player from the university to do so.

A total of 12 'Noles' have been named in the First All-American team in the past, but the 19-year-old starlet made history in becoming the first freshman of FSU to do so.

It's also the first time that a freshman has been selected to the First Team since Virginia’s Morgan Brian earned the recognition in 2011.

“It is a great honour for Megan,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian.

“She’s had a wonderful season and obviously the coaches around the country have recognised that and supported her for the highest awards we have in the country. To be recognized as a First Team All-American as a first-year player, as a freshman, is a great accomplishment.”

In this her first season on scholarship in the US, Connolly has been central to the Florida State success this season. She leads the team with nine goals and 10 assists, and despite missing three matches to play for the Republic of Ireland U19 team in September, Connolly was named the 2015 ACC Midfielder and Freshman of the Year.

Helping lead the 'Noles' to their third consecutive ACC Championship in 2015, Connolly has also earned NSCAA All-Region First Team honours and was the only freshman selected as one of the 15 finalists for the 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy.

On Friday, Connolly and her teammates lost 2-0 to Duke in the College Cup semi-final, ending their quest for back-to-back national titles.
